But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26(NIV)
We long to have intimacy with the Holy Spirit, right? But if we are honest, only a few of us enjoy a close relationship with Him.
It’s not that those who enjoy intimacy with the Spirit of God are special people. They are ordinary people like us, but they go the extra mile to get close to him.
Our relationship with the Holy Spirit starts at the point of salvation. But we become intimate with him when we surrender to his leading.
Like other relationships in our lives, our relationship with the Holy Spirit needs to be developed and nurtured.

This article will assist in building a close relationship with the Holy Spirit and in the process you will discover the many benefits of Intimacy with the Holy Spirit.
Intimacy with the Holy Spirit will enrich your spiritual life and deepens connection with God.
But how do we cultivate Intimacy with the Holy Spirit?
1. Through Prayer
See, just like God, the Holy Spirit will never force Himself on you. You need to be willing to grow intimacy with him.
The Holy Spirit will drive you if you allow him to. But he will never possess you. Ask God to stir your heart so that you have a great encounter with the Holy Spirit.
Another great way to build intimacy with the spirit of God through prayer is by praying in the spirit. Praying in the spirit helps us to spend quality time with the Holy Spirit.
When we pray in the spirit, we unite with the Holy Spirit on a deeper level. Our spirits get connected to God’s spirit, and we become Christ-like. (Ephesians 6:18)
2. Cultivate Awareness
The Holy Spirit is a constant companion. But you need to believe this and cultivate his presence for you to be intimate with him.
Now, developing awareness doesn’t necessarily mean that we shall experience physical intimacy with the Holy Spirit. But there will be times when we shall feel his presence physically.
See the Holy Spirit there with you as you go about your daily life. See him teaching you new things and helping you in difficult times.
3. Read the Bible
To cultivate intimacy with anyone, you need to understand who they are and how they function. The same is true about the Holy Spirit.
When you read the word of God, you get to know the character, role, and nature of the Holy Spirit. It also helps us understand how to relate to him.
As you read scripture, ask God to give you a deep revelation of who the Holy Spirit is. Ask Him to help you understand his role in your life. And how you should relate to him.
The Holy Spirit is part of the triune God. He is not an ‘it’ as some people would want you to believe. The Holy is the third person in the trinity and thus fully God. Just like God the Father and the Son, we need to build a relationship with him, and here is why:

4. He will Teach Us all Things
We need help from the Holy Spirit to understand spiritual matters. When we are intimate with him, he opens our minds so that we can understand the word of God. He also teaches us things that already happened and those that are yet to come.
We need him to help us understand scripture and how to apply it in our daily lives. By building our relationship with the Holy Spirit, we can hear God’s voice and follow his guidance.
5. You will Walk in Freedom and Holiness
The enemy wants us to live in bondage, so he feeds our minds with lies. If you are not vigilant, you may easily fall for his schemes. God’s word says that there is freedom where the Spirit of God is (1Corinthians 3:17).
When you are intimate with the Holy Spirit, he will counsel and show you right from wrong. He will not condemn you. But will lovingly tell you when you are wrong or about to walk in the wrong path.
The Holy Spirit will also bring scripture to mind so that you can fight against the lies of the enemy.
6. You will Enjoy your Relationship with God
Many people call themselves Christians, but very few enjoy their relationship with God. Our heavenly Father wants us to enjoy being in his presence. He doesn’t want us to spend time in his company out of obligation.
But for that to happen, we need to, first of all, have intimacy with the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who knows the heart and mind of God.
It’s only him that can search our hearts. And help us deal with issues that may be hindering us from enjoying our relationship with God.
7. You will become Courageous
If we are, to be honest, God’s things do not make sense to our human mind. Okay, at least most of them. There are things God asks us to do that leave us scratching our heads.
That is why we need to be intimate with the Holy Spirit. We need him to guide and strengthen us so that we can live courageously.
Knowing that you are living in the power of the Holy Spirit will cause you to do things courageously. Even those that do not make sense.
8. You will Serve others out of Love of God and not Fear of Man
Peter denied Jesus because of fear of the Pharisees. The other disciples ran away from Jesus when he was arrested (Mark 14:50-51). But when the Holy Spirit came upon them, they did not fear to die for Christ.
They preached the gospel courageously because they had surrendered themselves to the power of the Holy Spirit.
When you are not intimate with the Holy Spirit, you will find yourself serving-man out of fear. Like King Saul, you will find yourself striving to please man instead of God. But that is not the way it should be.
The Bible tells us to do everything as unto God and not man. But we cannot do that in our own strength. We need the Holy Spirit to help us.
9. Help you to be Kingdom Minded
There are times when we find ourselves struggling to maintain a kingdom mindset. With so many challenges, it becomes easy for us to follow the world’s way of doing things. It is easy to find yourself falling away from the things of God. And becoming carnally minded.
Having an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit will enable you to remain in tune with the things of God. And this helps us to maintain a kingdom mindset even when faced with big challenges.
10. Purpose of your Life
Are you living a purpose-driven life? Or do you go by the flow of things each day?
Well, we are all here to accomplish something. God planned out our lives before the foundation of the world. And he predestined us to do certain things in this world even before we were formed in our mother’s wombs.
Unfortunately, most of us are not living according to God’s will. We go about copying other people’s lifestyles. When we build intimacy with the Holy Spirit, it becomes easier for us to know and fulfill our purpose in life.
Why? He guides and teaches us all things about life. The Holy Spirit will show you your purpose by revealing your spiritual gift. And teaching you how to use it for God’s glory.

11. He will show you things yet to come
Has someone ever told you something would happen in your life, and then it happened? You were left speechless because you did not understand how they were able to predict it.
Well, you don’t have to be a prophet to know the things that will happen to you in the future. Before Peter could pray for Cornelius, God, through his spirit, told him to go and pray for him.
God showed John the things that are yet to come through the spirit. His spirit will show you things to come if you become intimate with Him.
12. Peace
King Saul had peace in his heart when he walked in obedience. But when he disobeyed God, the Spirit of God departed from him. And an evil spirit came and started tormenting him. (1 Samuel 16:14)
Well, God cannot take away the Holy Spirit from us like it was in the Old Testament. But being disobedient will block us from being close to the Holy Spirit. This will, in turn, cause us to lose the peace of God in our hearts.
When we are intimate with the Holy Spirit, we walk in peace because we know God’s presence. When trouble comes, we continue walking in the peace that surpasses understanding because the Holy Spirit is with us.
13. You will walk in Power
The disciples of Jesus were not able to do great things until they received the Holy Spirit. Jesus told them to wait for the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1).
When he came, these men and women started to do great exploits for the kingdom. Their intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit enabled them to be great people.
Do you desire to be like Jesus and to walk in the power of God? Start by building an intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.
In conclusion
God wants us to have an intimate relationship with him. And that is why he has given us the Holy Spirit to be our friend, teacher, and counselor. But the Spirit of God will never impose himself on us.
You need to cultivate and nurture the relationship you have with the Holy Spirit to experience great intimacy with him.
When we build intimacy with the Holy Spirit, we enjoy his presence, live purposeful lives, and grow spiritually. Pray and read your Bible so that you can know who the Holy Spirit is. And how to relate to him.
