The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18 NIV
To be an effective Christian, you need to learn how to connect with God. Technology has made it easy for us to connect with friends and family. But many of us are missing the most important connection that is our connection with God.
Most of us get caught up with the issues of life and end up drifting away from God. Yet it is only by connecting with him that we can do great exploits for the kingdom.
Some of us are going through a season where we can’t feel, hear, or connect with God. If that is you, please don’t give up. Jesus is knocking at the door of your heart.
Be present and open to the wisdom that he is giving you. Don’t allow the things of this world to distract you. The Spirit of God lives in you, and he wants you to connect with him now.

Why is it Important for Us to Connect with God?
- Increases Intimacy
You will never know who your friend is until you connect with him/her, right? The same is true about God. To understand who he is and experience deep intimacy with him, you need to connect with him.
- Helps us to Know our Purpose
It is only by connecting with our creator that we get to know his plans for us. None of us is here by accident. We were born for such a time as this so that we can do great exploits for God.
- To enjoy His Presence
God created us so that he could lavish his love on us. As the object of his love, He wants you to connect with him every day.
It doesn’t matter how far you have drifted from God. You can still get on track. Restoring your relationship with God will cause you to experience joy and peace on a deeper level.
This simple guide will help you connect with God. Let’s get started:
Study the Word of God
To have a connection with God, you need to make the first move. Yes, God is with you, he will never leave nor forsake you. But he will not force himself on you. You need to draw near to him so that he can draw near to you. (Hebrews 4:8)
So how do you do that?
Study the word of God. Scripture gives a vivid description of God’s love for man through his Son Jesus from Genesis to Revelation. It also helps you know how to connect with God.
To study the Word of God effectively, you need to:
- Set time aside each day
Be intentional about studying the word of God. Set time aside each day to read the Bible. You can choose to do it first thing in the morning or whenever it is convenient for you.
- Create a Place to Study the Word
For you to effectively study the word, you need time alone with God. Create space within your home where you can spend time alone in God’s presence. You don’t have to confine yourself to the house. You can also do it outside in a secluded place.
- Prepare your Heart and Materials
Before you start to read the Bible, prepare your heart by spending time talking to God. Tell him to remove anything that will hinder you from receiving his word of God in its purest form. Ask God to remove anything that will distract you.
Prepare the necessary materials that you need for Bible study. Get a pen, journal or paper, Bible dictionary, and your Bible. It is better to do this before your Bible study time.

Listen to God’s Voice
How do you communicate with your friends? You talk and then listen, right? Many of us speak to God, but we do not listen to what he says. Like any other relationship, you need to talk and also listen.
Communication is a two-way street in any given relationship. You will not know which way to go if you’re not following God’s guidance, that is why listening is essential. (John 10:27-28)
Make it a habit to spend a few minutes in silence before and after prayer. Do not be in a hurry to go and do other tasks after you’re done praying.
Take time to listen to God’s voice and write down what he is telling you. We forget quickly, so writing will help you remember what God said.
Be Mindful of God’s presence
Did you know that you can experience God’s presence by spending time outdoors? Look at his beautiful creation, the sky declares his glory and nature declares his love. Don’t determine God’s presence in your life by your feelings.
Being mindful of the presence of God will help you to remain connected to him. Do not take your relationship with God for granted, for he loves you very much. Practice his presence during bible study, prayer, and when you are enjoying the outdoors.
Creation is a reflection of God’s perfection. Do not seek for God’s presence in the church alone. God is not confined to a church building, he is everywhere. You can worship your heavenly father and connect with him as you watch the sunset. (Job 37: 14-16)
Talk to God
Sometimes we try so hard to reconnect with God. We give, ask people to pray for us, but what about just talking to him? How would you reconnect with an old friend that you’ve not seen for years? You would reach out and talk to them, right?
If you feel God is far away from you, talk to him. Unlike your old friend who probably went away, God is there waiting for you to speak with him.
It is through prayer that God reveals himself in ways that we never imagined. Prayer will help you to know the secret things of God. Talking to God will also help you to know who he is and what he has planned for you.
God is always close to those who call upon him, so run to him and talk to him. He tells us in his word to pray without ceasing. So we can talk to him anytime, anywhere, whenever we feel like it. Talk to God like would a friend. Tell him what is in your heart.
Confess your Sins
We have done things that we are not proud of. The guilt in our hearts has made some of us run away from God instead of towards him. Like Adam and Eve, we hide behind the bushes thinking that God doesn’t know what we have done.
Maybe you stopped reading the word of God, praying, and attending church because of sin. But you can no longer live like this. Restoring your relationship with God is the most important thing for you right now. You want to be led by him.
God is willing and ready to listen to you. Like the story of the Prodigal son, he is waiting for you with arms wide open. The blood of Jesus has cleansed you from all sin.
So you can go to God’s presence in a time of need and mercy, and confess your sins. Do not be afraid to approach God’s throne of Grace because of sin or your past mistakes. He has forgiven you and wants to connect you. (1 John 1:9)

Repent
You may be wondering, isn’t confessing sin the same as repentance? Well, no, they are different. Confession means admitting your sins to him and asking God to forgive you. Repentance means a change of heart.
Now let’s say you backslid but want to work on your relationship with God again. You want to change, but don’t know how to connect with God.
Backsliding leaves us feeling so lost. The enemy would love for us to believe that we cannot reconnect with God after backsliding. He will bring condemning charges against you so that you can abandon your faith completely.
Don’t fall for his lies. Believe that you can restart your relationship with God. Reach out to him through prayer and turn away from your sinful ways. Change your ways and start walking in the ways that are pleasing to your heavenly father.
Stand firm on the word knowing that you are no longer under condemnation. Remember Jesus has forgiven you of your past, present, and future sins.
Be Thankful
Most of us disconnect from God because we focus on the challenges we are going through instead of Him. The enemy would like us to magnify our problems, but the Bible tells us to magnify the Lord. But how do we do that? By being thankful.
Having a thankful heart is a choice. Do not wait to rejoice when you’re happy. There will always be challenges that will leave us questioning God and make us feel depressed and lost. Be thankful even in such times.
Practice thanksgiving irrespective of what you’re going through. When we remain grateful towards God, our negative emotions are converted into positive emotions. We end up feeling close and connected with God.
Buy a gratitude journal or download an app. Write three to five things that you are thankful for each day. You can thank God for your family, friends, and the great things that he has done in your life. Thank him for giving up his only Son for you and for his faithfulness.
Focus on your Identity in Christ
The enemy will make you feel worthless as long as you focus on yourself instead of Jesus. And the truth is you will never feel good enough as long as you focus on yourself. You need to focus on Jesus, for it is only him who completes you.
It is through his death on the cross that you became the child of God. His great sacrifice has made you righteous. When you struggle with thoughts of defeat, remind yourself that God did not spare his only Son for you.
Live knowing that you were created out of love. That you are complete in Christ. In times when you don’t feel God’s presence ask Him to show you how much he loves you.
Having that revelation will help you to be secure in Christ. Your identity in Christ will deepen your desire for God. You will live knowing that without him, you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

Keep the Right Company
The kind of people you associate with will determine your spiritual growth. If you keep company with the right people, then they will draw you close to God. But if you keep company with the wrong people, they will pull you away from God.
Take time and evaluate all your friends. Be completely honest with yourself. If there is someone who has been encouraging you to stay away from the things of God, avoid them.
Remember, it is easier for an unbeliever to draw you away from God. But it may be hard for you to draw them to the kingdom. (Galatians 5:9)
If you don’t have any spiritual friends, ask God to bring the right people in your life. You can visit elderly faith-filled members of your church and ask them to share your testimonies with you. You can also look for prayer partners so that you can spend time praying together.
Give/Serve
Did you know that giving will cause you to connect with God? Well, many of us think that only the people who receive benefit from giving. But it goes both ways. Connect with God by donating things from your closet. You can give by serving people at a homeless shelter or visit patients in hospitals.
When we give we become happy, and this causes us to become stronger physically and mentally. It will also cause you to have a deep connection with God because God loves cheerful givers.
When you see other people praising God because you have helped them, you get to understand God’s love. Seeing smiles and tears on their faces will cause you to understand God’s character.
In conclusion
There will be times in your life when you will find yourself detached from God. Times when you will not feel the presence of God. In such times remember that you are not alone. Learning how to connect with God will help you know the necessary step to take in such times.
If there is sin in your life, you need to confess. If you backslid but want to connect with God again repent your ways. Know that God loves you, and he wants to have an intimate relationship with you. But for that to happen, you need to draw to him first.
Reconnect with God by studying the Bible. Focus on your real identity, talk to God, cultivate a grateful heart, give, and keep the right company. Observing these few things will help you to restore your relationship with God. It will also help you to enjoy intimacy with him and know your purpose in life.
