7 Best Ways To Overcome Sexual Immorality

Sexual immorality is on the rise in our society. As Dr. Jeremiah David once said, “America’s moral compass seems no longer to have a true north.”

Visit social media, turn on your TV, or go to the internet and you will see the truth of this statement.

We have polluted the airwaves with so much sexual content that sex has been made so cheap and meaningless.

It is increasingly becoming an uphill task to serve in such an environment as a devout Christian who wants to live a chaste life. But it is possible to pull it off.

The following are the 7 Best Ways to Overcome Sexual Immorality.

  1. Watch what you watch.

WYSIWYG is a computer terminology that means, What You See Is What You Get. It is true in matters of sexual immorality.

Your eyes are doors to your soul. The thoughts you have are greatly affected by what you see.

If you sow a thought, you will reap an action.

If you sow an action, you will reap a habit

You sow a habit, you will reap a character

If you sow a character, you will reap a destiny.

But where do thoughts come from? Well, mostly from what we see. If you continue watching immoral scenes on TV and the internet, you will eventually find yourself in immorality.

Job must have understood this timeless principle when he said:

I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin? Job 31:1

  1. Remember the cross

It took the death of the son of God for you to be redeemed. If you read through the gospels, you will hear Jesus referring to himself over and over again as a son of man.

He was trying to remind us that even though he was the son of God, he was walking the earth as God incarnate. In other words, he was 100% human too.

When he was nailed to the cross, he felt the pain just as much as the next guy. When he was whipped and spat on, he felt the pain and anguish of any son of man would.

And he did all that because he had taken upon himself to carry your sins so that you wouldn’t have to be under the power of sin anymore.

Is it fair to continue living in sexual immorality when the son of God paid such a dear price for your righteousness? Was he crucified in vain?  Check out what the Bible says about this:

Christ gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. Titus 2:14

You were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers [but with the precious blood of Christ].

He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 1 Peter 1:182:24

  1. God means good for you

This is a very important principle in dealing with sexual immorality. You have to realize that when God warns you against something, it is because he wants to protect you and it is because he means good for you.

Unfortunately, we keep forgetting that we are products of a producer and we end up questioning our producer.

Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18

God knew the damage sexual immorality can do to an individual and to society at large.

Think of the broken homes, the depressed people, the suicides, the love triangles, the sexually transmitted diseases… the list is endless.

These are what God is trying to protect us from when he warns against sexual immorality.

  1. Sexuality is a gift from God.

Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of your youth. As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love.

For why should you, my son, be exhilarated with an adulteress, And embrace the bosom of a foreigner? Proverbs 5:18-20

Before you accuse God of not wanting you to have fun, remember that your sexuality is a gift from him. It would make no sense to give your kids a gift and then not want them to enjoy it.

However, every responsible parent knows that they would not want their kids to be irresponsible with the gifts they gave them. In fact, we often blackmail our kids that if they do not behave with the gifts, we will not buy them more gifts.

In the same way, God gave us a great gift – the gift of sexuality. But this gift must only be used and enjoyed in the parameters of marriage. That is the proper design and use of sex.

  1. Rely on God’s help.

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? Romans 8:32

Sexual immorality, or any other sin for that matter, cannot be overcome by human effort or wisdom. It can only be overcome by complete reliance on God.

Trying to deal with it on your own is a sure recipe for failure. But the good news is God is not only willing and ready to help but he is also the almighty God.

There is nothing that is too hard for him. When you think of people like Joseph and Daniel who stood firm in faith against ungodliness when it was more convenient to bow to pressure, you will realize that their secret was their complete reliance on God.

If you start putting your trust in God and asking him for help, help will come speedily!

  1. Think of the consequences of Sexual Immorality.

I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

And if your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. Matthew 5:27-29

We have already pointed out that God warned us against sexual immorality because of the immediate consequences. However, there is an even more important consequence – eternal damnation.

Thinking about this should be a good enough deterrent for any sound person. Hell is the last place you want to spend the rest of your eternity.

Can you imagine being thrown into the lake of fire just because you couldn’t apply some little self-control?

  1. Lust makes you blind to other Godly desires.

If everything fails, just remember that lust is actually the driving force behind sexual immorality.

And the biggest problem with lust, apart from the going to hell part, is that it makes you blind to lots of other awesome Godly desires.

Instead of using your emotions on lustful desires, you can train them on greater spiritual joys.
