19 Proven Ways To Trust God Completely

By David •  Updated: 01/01/19 •  23 min read

Trust God Completely!! this is a statement made by many individuals, but unless your faith in God is structurally sound, it is hard to keep it when going through hard times.

If we do anything, we must build up our faith and trust God. If we don’t, we could very well put ourselves in a bad position the next time a test or trial comes along.

Do you trust God? When you have difficulties and worry overwhelms you, it is time to trust God.

We could get stressed out from worries and fears or make bad decisions that will hurt us and cause even more stress.

To trust God is exactly where God wants us to be. Proverbs 3:5 says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your understanding.

Why should we trust God Completely?

Much of our spiritual life is based on a simple action: trust. We are called to trust God. Believing in God implies a certain abandonment. We need to put more faith in God than in ourselves.

Natural trust – the expectation of human help – is a great incentive for men’s lives. But expecting help from men often leads to disappointment.

This disappointment that we experience when others break our trust can shape how we trust God. We are hesitant to believe in God when we start to think that we cannot trust anyone.

However, those who trust in God, on the other hand, are never disappointed. Anyone who expects God to help him is, thus, recognizing that God is omnipotent and good.

He can help us and wants to do that, and that He is, above all, merciful. We must keep in mind that God only allows what will bring us closer to him.

God is not a god-like Zeus, who is waiting to bring us down. But He is a God of mercy, ready to welcome us back to the fold. That is why we must trust him and no doubt his mysterious ways.

Reasons to Trust God

“The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him” (Nahum 1.7).

God’s character is the basis of our trust in him. The prophet Nahum highlights three precious truths about God.

First, God is essentially good. He is good in His being, words, and works. From Him comes every good gift. Even when circumstances show his scowl, we can see his kindness smiling at us.

Second, God is a safe refuge on the day of affliction.

God never promised that we would not see challenges. But when pain is throbbing in our chest, when anguish throws its tentacles at us, when the blood enemy lurks to kill us, we can run to God and find shelter and peace in him.

Third, God knows those who take refuge in him. What does that mean?

God loves those who run into his arms. He welcomes them as beloved children. Forgive their sins, giving them the embrace of forgiveness and the kiss of reconciliation.

In God, we find a true refuge for time and eternity. We are safe under the wings of the Almighty. In God, we can trust.

What does it mean to trust God?

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3: 5

For the dictionary, to trust is: To have faith, to hope, to have confidence.

No matter what happens, you will turn to Him.

That’s it. Whoever has faith and trusts in God fully does not despair.

Trusting God does not mean that He will do your will. It means that you trust that God’s will is the best for you. Trusting God is doing your part and being at peace with the consequences. Of course, you have to do your part.

Even despite your circumstances, trusting God means you continue to turn to Him. You keep praying, even when it seems God is not answering. You keep saying, like Job:

The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Benefits of trusting God

  1. He takes care of you.

“But the Lord always cares for those who honor and trust in his love’.

You could be in any dangerous place or situation. But trust in God and your loving reverence for Him will cause His gaze to always be on you to ensure your safety and integrity

  1. He gives you Joy.

“Our heart rejoices in the Lord; we fully trust in his holy name”. Your determined faith in God will give you very special joy and contentment to your heart that comes directly from his hand.

Just by mentioning his name amid tribulations, you will rejoice because you have a God who will solve everything in the best way. And it will always work out for your good.

  1. He helps you.

“We trust in the Lord. He helps us and protects us”. In conflicts, in decisions, and in everything you have to do, the Lord will send his timely and effective help, protecting you from failure and from those who seek to do you harm.

So how do we trust God with all our hearts? Here are 19 proven ways to trust God completely:

  1. Surrender Yourself and All of Your Troubles to God.

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

When you realize that there’s supernatural strength available to you from above, then your perspective on life will change.

You can move from worry to worship by realizing that God is in control of every circumstance in your life.

Let Him be the Master of you and everything in your life. Once you stop trying to do things in your strength, God will take over and lift you to new heights.

The scripture in Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

“I will give you rest.” That is to say. He will deliver you from your worry. He will support you in everything.

God does not intend to put us to bed so that we fall asleep holding his hand. Oh! No, he wants to pull us out of bed, out of our languor, our exhaustion, our spiritual lethargy.

He wants to give us energy, activity, life. We are talking about resignation to the will of God!

  1. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones

“For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7a

Thoughts become what you are. Constantly repeating that you are not good or that everything in your life is wrong only makes that become your reality.

To live a full and happy life, it is important to change your perspective on things. Reprogram your mind, and change your thoughts.

Your thoughts are extremely powerful, and they can affect things like your mood, attitude, and yes, even your actions.

So when you find yourself thinking negative thoughts that bring you down, start thinking about positive scriptures that will lift you.

You can do this by committing to memory a favorite scripture.

For example: “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.” Psalm 125:1

Keep repeating that positive verse out loud until your negative thoughts are replaced with God’s peace that transcends all understanding.

  1. Ask God to Help You to Have Patience

“Rejoicing in hope, patient[a] in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer”.  Romans 12:12

Patience is the ability to endure delay, trouble, opposition, or suffering without being angry, frustrated, or anxious. We can develop patience as we seek to do God’s will.

And accept when He decides to have things happen, trusting that He will keep all the promises He has made to us. By learning to be patient in the little things, we prepare ourselves to face the biggest trials with patience.

It’s a fact that God will come through for you at just the right moment. He’ll never fail you. You’ll need to stay in prayer during this time because your faith will be tested.

During your trial, ask God to give you the grace to be patient and help you trust that He knows what’s best for you. Remember, God is never a second late. He always shows up on time.

  1. Confidence in the Word of God

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

True Christians believe in the Word of God because God’s word is powerful.

“For this reason, we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.” 1Thessalonians 2:13.

Rather than looking for explanations from “philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world. We can boldly approach the throne of grace and boldly says “What says the Scripture?” (Romans 4:3).

If we ponder the nature of Scripture, we can see that the LORD Jesus Christ, who identifies Himself as the Truth (John 14:6), is one with His Word.

Further, John notes that the LORD Jesus Christ proclaims His name as “The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13) at His Second Coming.

So, when we ask, “What saith the Scripture?” (Galatians 4:30), we are asking, “What saith the Lord Jesus Christ?”

  1. Don’t Depend on Yourself

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall [a]direct your paths”. Proverbs 3:5-6

We live in a world where trust must be earned and seems to be in short supply. But Solomon, the famous king who wrote Proverbs, knew that trust is exactly where we must start.

Most of us have faced disappointments, which have taught us that we can only depend upon ourselves. But living the life God has called us to means unlearning that lesson.

Instead, we’re meant to rest in God’s understanding. We may know in our minds that He possesses all wisdom: “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!” Romans 11:33.

But sometimes, to trust God completely like that can be tough. So, each day we must consciously lay aside our plans and expectations—and surrender to His plans.

  1. Cry Out to God

“The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.” Psalm 34:10

Surrendering to God begins with our lips and our thoughts.

We need more than a commitment to depend on Him; we need to cry out to Him to show that dependence. “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” Proverbs 3:6

When we pray, we admit that His ways are higher than ours. We show that we’re leaving our troubles and burdens and dreams in His capable hands.

The Bible promises that when we reach out to Him in prayer, He hears us: “Evening, morning, and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.” Psalm 55:17

We handed the keys of our lives to Him, and we know that He’s able to lead us. But for that to work, we have to trust God completely.

  1. Put God First in Your Life

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

It’s easiest to put ourselves first. When something good happens, we want to congratulate ourselves with a reward. When something bad happens, we want to console ourselves or find someone to blame.

In other words, we often have a “me-centric” starting place. And when it comes to money, the struggle is even harder.

Solomon, who had quite a bit of wealth himself, knew that his money didn’t belong to him: That’s why the scripture in Proverbs 3:9-10 says “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

If we can trust God completely with our wealth, we’re truly showing how much we depend on Him. Although it takes a huge amount of faith to do this, doing so means being God-centric.

  1. Listen to the Holy Spirit

When Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to the church, He told His disciples that this Counselor would be their spiritual compass or GPS: “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)

As we go through our day, this same Holy Spirit guides us, too. That means we don’t have to do it alone or hope we’re getting it right.

No, the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth and protects us: “Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.” (2 Timothy 1:14)

After all, the Holy Spirit’s gift to us believers reminds us that we can truly trust God.

  1. Rest in God’s Love

“For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.” Hebrews 4:10

When we face a difficult world each day, we can sometimes wonder if God even cares. Why do bad things happen? Where is God when I need Him?

Solomon reminds us that God never takes a break or leaves us to fend for ourselves: “because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father, the son he delights in.” Proverbs 3:12

Even in turmoil, God sticks with us and uses those challenges to shape us. When we understand that, our perspective completely flips.

No longer do we see our setbacks as failures. We see them as moments when God works on us as our loving Father.

And that’s exactly why we can trust God with all our hearts. He cares for us every day. God gives us what we need to thrive. He pours blessing after blessing upon us.

  1. Trust His Character

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” Deut 29:29

Trusting God’s character even when you don’t understand His actions is another way to trust God.

God does not require nor ask us to fully comprehend him or understand all that he does. If he wanted us to know everything there is to know, he would have revealed everything there is to know.

But instead, God has given us all the truth we need to know about him and his dealings in the world, and this is we’re humbly called to trust God in the light of this revelation. Roman 9:20; Romans 11:33

The Bible very clearly communicates that God is perfect in character. This, therefore, must be our starting point as we think through the less clear realities presented in the Bible.

We are not to critically scrutinize God’s actions according to our finite perspectives of goodness, love, righteousness, and justice. We are to let him define for us what is good, loving, righteous, and just.

  1. Trust His Control

What does it cost us to put our lives, our plans, our loved ones, our desires, everything we own….into His hands? What do we have to give up to give in to His control?

These two Bible portion encourages us to trust God and place everything in His hand everything in His hands “The works of his hands are truth and justice; all His instructions are trustworthy.”

Psalm 111:7 “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” – Proverbs 29:25 also made mention of trusting God’s control. That way, one can trust God.

  1. Trust God Completely for His Care

Do you believe God is good? If not, why? How does this one issue affect your willingness to trust His care?

When are we to trust God’s care? According to the Book of Isaiah 50:10 – “Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant?

Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on their God.” We should not take to ‘trust God completely’ an option. And we should not have to allow anything to keep us away from trusting God completely.

The common thought is that if we follow the rules, all will go well. Nothing could be further from the truth. To let go and trust God is the only way to fulfill our destinies.

As human beings, we are wired with the desire to always be in control. We think we can control our destinies by planning carefully and carefully following our plans.

The truth is, our destinies are out of our control. We control our actions but not necessarily the outcomes of those actions.

There is nothing we as human beings can do to change God’s plan for our lives. We will reap the rewards only when we let go and trust Him.

  1. Making Decisions

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

We are faced with making decisions from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep. Some decisions require only a passing thought, while others require deep concentration, courage, and extraordinary strength.

When faced with difficult choices, it may be overwhelming to take it alone. During these challenging times, we need to let go and trust God to help us find a solution.

Our love for God allows us to trust him with our most important decisions. The spirit of boldness he endows us with allows us to go to him with all our issues and challenges. We can always trust him to help us make the best decision for our situation and his glory.

Difficult choices will seem insignificant when surrendered to the all-powerful God. His hands are stretched out, and his ears are ever open to our cries for help. Reach out to him when decision-making threatens to overturn your boat.

  1. Facing Fear

We all face fearful situations from time to time. Psychology Today describes fear as “a vital response to physical and emotional danger”.

A perceived threat usually triggers fear. Some individuals experience extreme fears, referred to as phobias, limiting their activities and relationships with others.

The Bible assures us in both the Old and New Testaments that we do not need to fear when we trust God.

In Deuteronomy 31:8, the Israelite’s were assured with these words “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” These words still apply to us today. We will never be discouraged once we trust God.

No matter how dismal the situation may appear, just reach out to the God of our salvation. Remember, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). The word of God is forever; take heart, and do not be afraid.

  1. Embracing Silence

It is often very tempting to share all we know and sometimes even what we only think we know. However, the Bible speaks of the dangers of talking too much.

The tongue, according to the scriptures, can cause a lot of damage.

In an attempt to let go and trust God, we need to spend much time in silence. It is only in these silent moments that we can hear God speaking.

When we are speaking, we are unable to listen.

The Bible speaks of speaking hastily without having all the facts. As seen in Proverbs 17:28, “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.”

Let go of your desire to speak on impulse and let God lead you to speak what is necessary when he wants you to.

  1. Praying and Praising

The Bible instructs us to ask God for whatever we want and we will receive it. However, many of us have stories of things we have asked for and not received.

We need to remember that God is not a genie in a bottle who will grant all our wishes.

Whenever we pray for something, we need to just let go and trust God to grant our wishes as he determines.

In the book of 1Kings 3:5, God told Solomon “ask for whatever you want me to give you.” Solomon could have asked for wealth or power, but instead, he asked for “a discerning heart” (1Kings 3:9).

As a result of this wise and unselfish request, he received much more than he asked for. Likewise, when we pray, we need to bear in mind that our requests must first honor God rather than ourselves.

We should not forget to praise God even in our struggles. Reflect on your past victories and praise him, knowing that he does not change.

He is not a one-trick magician. Whatever he did yesterday, he can do today, tomorrow, and forever.

Let go and trust God to see you through as you flood the gates of heaven with your praises.

  1. Formulating Plan B

Things don’t always go according to plan, no matter how detailed the plan is. In such instances, we have to think of a plan B. The apostle Paul faced such a situation as we read in the book of Acts 16:7-10.

Paul and the others wanted “to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.” Instead, “Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him to ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.'” God had alternate plans for Paul.

In the same way that God led Paul into his divine will, he will do the same for those who let go of their desires and trust His divine will.

God wants us to be flexible so he can use us to the fullest.

If we hold back in the least, we will miss out on God’s best. Our plan A is insignificant when compared to God’s plan B. I admonish you to let go today and trust God.

  1. Showing Bravery

Being brave is often equated with aggression. However, as seen in the book of Esther, brave acts can be achieved through gentleness.

Esther was asked to risk her life by entering the presence of the King without an invitation, an act worthy of death.

Having realized the seriousness of what she was about to do, she decided to let go of her fears and trust God with her life.

Esther summoned all the Jews to fast and pray for three days and nights while also doing the same. Esther 4:16 states, “When this is done I will go to the King, even though it is against the law.

And if I perish, I perish.”

We need to have the same mindset when faced with danger, threats, uncertainty. We need to sacrifice our all and trust God to see us through. There is no need for force or aggression.

God will fight our battles for us. He will always see us through.

  1. Facing Tough Challenges

Challenges are a normal part of our daily existence. However, some tough challenges force us to wonder if God is still there.

When faced with these types of situations, we need to comfort ourselves with the word of God.

One may not be able to feel or express joy during those moments, but one can have peace by placing all those feelings of despair on God’s capable shoulders.

The book of Psalms tells us to “taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him” (38:4).

His goodness may not be evident while you are severely challenged. However, if you take the time to think about it, you will realize that the situation could have been worse.

Be thankful in whatever situation you find yourself in, God is with you, protecting you, and most of all, sustaining you through it all.

In conclusion

I hope that these nuggets have encouraged you. Trusting is not always easy for most of us. However, it is important to note that God is not like a man, so he will not disappoint us.

He has promised to be with us to the end of the age. Let go and trust God!

To trust God completely isn’t an easy thing to come by, but it’s one of the most important parts of our relationship with God.

When times are tough, and things aren’t going our way, that’s when we find it the most difficult to trust God.

We doubt that God will come through for us, we lack faith in His promises, and we worry ourselves with endless thoughts about our future.

These are the ’19 proven ways to trust God completely’ when considered, will help us always trust God.
