75 Awesome Benefits Praise and Worship

Praise and worship are not just some titles we use to describe a certain time in a church service when the music team takes center stage to lead the congregation in a singing and dancing session.

So what then are praise and worship? For clarity, I would like to explain both terms separately.

What is Praise?

Praise refers to the act of commending, applauding, or magnifying something or someone. For the believer, it is an outward expression of worship to God or the act of glorifying Him.

However, it is important to note that praise does not necessarily have to be directly correlated with music. Rather, it comes from the depth of the heart.

Meanwhile, it involves humbling and centering all of our attention on God with heart-felt expressions of love, thanksgiving, and adoration.

When we praise God, we simply tell Him and those around us how awesome He is. Next, we acknowledge His power, authority, goodness, mercy, and all the other wonderful things about Him.

Furthermore, praise translates us into the power of God and realms of the supernatural. That is why Psalms 89:15 – 16 says, Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, Lord. 16: They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness. (NIV)

A wonderful example is found in the song Mary proclaimed while still carrying Jesus in her womb (See Luke 1:46-55).

Filled with the Spirit of God and fully aware of His greatness, she spoke of how magnificent God is. She sang of how great He is, not only to her but to people of all nations.

What is Worship?

Worship is expressing reverence and adoration towards God and the act of magnifying Him for all that He is.

Though music is one of the most common forms of worship, it certainly goes beyond singing some touching or heart-felt Christian songs.

Worship is instead a lifestyle of holiness. True worship is authentic because it comes from the heart. John 4:23-24 sums this up.

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24: God is Spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth. God is a Spirit, and He requires that we who worship Him must also do so in Spirit.

An excellent biblical example of true worship in the Spirit is found in John 12:3 when Mary, the sister of Lazarus, anointed the feet of Jesus with expensive perfume. Judas was quick to criticize her action because he saw it as a waste.

He claimed the money would have been enough to feed the poor. Jesus, on the other hand, saw that his statement held no true worship toward him, so he rebuked Judas. But He defended Mary, saying that she anointed Him ahead of His burial, thus showing her complete devotion – true worship.

How to Praise and Worship God.

There are many actions involved with praise and worship to God — singing, verbal expressions of thanksgiving, adoration, dancing, clapping, lifting of hands, and so on. But true praise and worship do not go through these motions. Neither do they have to follow a certain sequence?

In Matthew 15, Jesus spoke about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, whose worship was not from the heart but only an outward show.

“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” – Matthew 15:8 (NIV). Genuine praise and worship are matters of humility and sincere devotion to God from within.

Here are some tips on how to praise and worship God:

Our devotion to God is part of our worship.

So set time daily to thank God for a new day; study your Bible, pour your heart’s content to Him during your time of meditating and listening to Him. These and more make our lives living sacrifices.

  • Sing:

Singing cannot be separated from praise and worship. Hence, it would help if you incorporated singing into your routine.

It does not have to be done in a special way; songs of praise can naturally flow from your lips regardless of where you are or what you are doing at any point in time.

Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to God: for it is; pleasant, and praise is beautiful! – Psalm 147:1 (NIV). You may also lift your hands to God.

Lifting of hands is a sign of total surrendering to Him and a part of our worship. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord. Psalm 134:2 (NIV).

  • Dance:

While praising and worshipping God, you may dance to the glory of God. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing.

Psalm 100:2 (NIV). Psalm 149:3 also says, “Let them praise His name with the dance; let them sing praises to Him with the timbrel and harp.”(NIV)

  • Adore Him with words:

Sometimes, our praise or worship of God can be expressed through words. This is the out pour of your heart’s content to God in reverence, adoration, or gratitude.

Therefore by Him, let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. – Hebrews 13:15 (NIV)

  • Pray:

The Lord confides in those who fear Him; He makes His covenant known to them. – Psalm 25:14 (NIV). Engage in conversations with God at all times like you would with a friend. This is a form of worship to Him.

Turn your complaints into praise:

It is only natural to want to complain about small inconveniences. Instead of doing that, stop complaining about anything that gets in your way in the slightest.

If you are intentional to notice when you are complaining, do all you can to stop and instead turn that complaint into praise – something that you are thankful for.

  • Love others:

Be intentional about loving others in every situation, whether they are lovable or not. Jesus loves us regardless of who we are. Likewise, you should extend the same love to others by being a positive, godly influence to those around you, especially those who do not know Christ. Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.

Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. – 1 John 4:7 (NIV). Ephesians 4:29 also says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (NIV).

  • Fellowship with other believers:

I will declare Your name to My brethren; in the midst of the assembly, I will sing praise to You. – Hebrews 2:12 (NIV).
