13 Signs God is Calling You to do Something

It’s our desire to always know what God wants us to do so that we don’t miss what He wants to do in and through us.

God gives us signs that point to what He wants us to do and ensures that we don’t miss them. In this article, we will look at 13 signs God is calling you to do something.

After the great flood of Noah’s time, God gave a rainbow as a sign of His covenant between Him and earth. He said that He would not destroy the earth by a flood again (Genesis 9:12-14).

This is only one of many signs God gives in His Word. When He wants us to do something today, He will give us a sign.

When you receive a sign from God, pray over it so you will know what He is calling you to do. This makes it clear that it is the voice of God you are hearing. Pay attention to the signs you sense are from God.

Below are 13 signs God is calling you to do something.

1. A Scripture that Gives Direction or Instruction.

God will give you a Scripture that shows what He is calling you to do. He speaks to us a lot through His written Word.

As we do our daily devotions, He gives us direction or instructions that He wants us to execute. When we meditate on the Word of God, we get insight into the things that apply to our unique situations in life.

Joshua 1:8 tells us that we should meditate on the Word and do as it says so that we can be successful in all we do.

When God is calling you to do something, He will give you a Bible verse that is very specific. You will know that it concerns a particular issue, and will give you a clear direction on what to do.

2. A Dream or Vision with Directions.

Dreams and visions are an avenue that God uses to communicate to us and let us know what He wants us to do. A dream or vision with directions is a sign that God wants you to obey them.

The apostle Paul had a vision one time where he saw a man standing and begging him to go to Macedonia. He said, “Come over to Macedonia and help us” (Acts 16:9).

Paul was on his way to Bithynia when the Holy Spirit stopped Him. Paul interpreted the vision as God trying to tell him to go to Macedonia to preach the gospel.

In the same way, God gives us dreams and visions to show that He is calling us to do something.

3. You Feel the Holy Spirit Lead You to Do Something.

When you have a leading from the Holy Spirit to do something, it is a sign from God to take action. Romans 8:14 says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” God directs us by His Spirit and shows us what He wants us to do.

Is the Spirit of God leading you to do something? You can obey what He is leading you to do because it is God’s will and desire for you in this season.

4. You Hit a Dead End.

Sometimes you will hit a dead end when you are going down a path that God does not want you to.

You may try several times to continue in that direction but you sense that the road is blocked. This is a sign that God is calling you to do something else.

When you stop going in that direction and pray about what is happening, God will give you instructions on which path to take. The old path is no longer taking you where God wants you to be.

Instead of insisting on breaking through in a certain direction, listen to the new directions from God. You will end up in the right place and find the blessings God had in place for you.

5. God Highlights a Need Someone Has.

Are there times you notice a need someone has and sense that God is calling you to meet it?

That is a sign from God that He is calling you to help that person. This is one interesting way that God gets our attention when He wants us to help others.

Philippians 4:19 tells us that God will supply our needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. This means that God uses others to meet our needs and uses us to meet the needs of others.

When God calls you to meet the need of another, He has already provided you with the resources you need.

6. Passion for What You are Doing will Fade.

When God wants us to do something new in the current season, the passion we have for what we are doing fades. We no longer enjoy what we are doing and this can make us wonder what is happening.

The grace we had lifted, and we have no choice but to go back to God and find out what He is saying. Then God makes it clear that He wants you to do something else.

Seasons change, and this means that God has new assignments for us. If we are not paying attention, He gives us signs that things are changing, and it’s time to focus on something different.

God desires that we perceive the new thing He wants to do in our lives (Isaiah 43:19) and what He wants us to do.

7. Doors are Closing.

Have you ever tried to walk through a certain door of opportunity and found that it closed before you could get in?

This can be disheartening but it may be one of the signs God is calling you to do something else. God knows that if we walk through some doors of opportunity, we will miss out on what He wants us to do.

When we experience closed doors, we are forced to look for an open door. We may never notice the open door before us if we are focused on breaking down the doors that God has closed.

Next time you come across a closed door, find out which door of opportunity God has opened for you.

8. An Unexpected Opportunity Shows Up.

Sometimes an unexpected opportunity shows up and we wonder what to make of it. This could be a sign from God that He is calling you to take up the opportunity.

God surprises us with unexpected opportunities especially when we have been praying for them for a long time. Most of the time such opportunities show up, our minds are focused on other things.

When Joseph was called by Pharaoh to interpret a dream, he didn’t know this was an unexpected opportunity. He would be the ruler of Egypt directly under Pharaoh.

Joseph had come from prison and was only expecting to interpret a dream and possibly go back to jail. Joseph gave Pharaoh a strategy on what to do after interpreting his dreams.

Pharaoh said that there was no better person than Joseph to take over the job of executing the strategy. Pharaoh gave him the job and great authority to do it (Genesis 41:39-40).

God can bring a surprise opportunity as a sign of what He wants you to do just like He did for Joseph. It will be unexpected but very timely.

9. A Burden in Your Heart for Something.

When God is calling you to do something, one sign He will give you is a burden for that thing. You have heard people talk about how God has put a burden in their hearts for the lost, children, missions, young adults, etc. This is a burden that represents what God wants a person to do, and it is usually a very strong impression in the heart.

A burden is something you want to do for others as your service to God. It fills you with joy knowing that you will be doing the work of God and impacting the lives of others. When you get a burden from the Lord, pray about it, and seek guidance from God on what to do and where to do it.

10. You Have an Inner Knowing.

One of the many signs God is calling you to do something is that you will have an inner knowing of what to do. It will be as clear as night and day.

1 John 2:20 says, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.” This means that we know things in our hearts because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit on us.

Having an inner knowledge of what God wants you to do gives you the conviction to go ahead and do it. It is very comforting to be sure about what God wants you to do.

It sets you free to take action knowing you have the backing of God. Even if you encounter naysayers, you will not be swayed by their opinions because you are sure you are doing the right thing.

11. You Have a Sense of Peace about Doing Something.

A sign that shows God is calling you to do something is that you will have peace about it. The peace of God is a big sign that you are moving in the right direction.

Philippians 4:7 says that the peace of God guards our hearts and minds in Christ. This is the peace that we experience when God is calling us to do something.

If there is one thing we desire when we want to do something is to know that God has approved of it. One way He does this is to give you peace which puts you at ease to move forward.

The peace of God will guide you in the right direction. This also means that when you lack peace about something, it is wise to stop and find out why.

You are likely to keep doing the thing God is calling you to do when you have His peace in your heart.

12. God Makes You Notice Something that is Amiss.

As you go about your business out there, God makes you notice something and calls you to take action. This is usually a sign from him. It could be that He wants you to pray about it or do something specific.

There are many things out in the world that are not working as they should, and God calls us to provide solutions as He enables us.

If you sense that God is highlighting an issue to you, pray and ask what He wants you to do about it. He will always give you insight and direction.

We are solution providers and God gives us divine solutions for the many challenges that the world experiences.

Next time you sense God is highlighting something amiss to you, pray and ask for His guidance before doing anything.

13. God Points You in a Different Direction.

Imagine praying for something, and the answer God gives you points you in another direction. This is a sign that God is calling you to move in that direction.

When we pray for direction, it’s because we don’t know which way to go. God will lead us in a different direction to position us for what He wants us to do.

If the things God is asking you to do are pointing in a different direction, He is probably calling you to take a new path. When you follow His directions, you will find that you enjoy it more.

Conclusion

There are many signs that God uses when He is calling you to do something. The 13 signs God is calling you to do something above are just the beginning.

Always confirm the things you sense with the Bible to make sure that they are signs from God. Pray and ask God to help you identify the signs He gives you along the journey of life.
